Here was an airframe fitted with an engine of far more promise: a hp Suzuki V6 driving an impressive 84 inch diameter Whirlwind Aviation propeller through a reduction gearbox. The fact that the up-engining job has been done elsewhere in the world most assuredly does not give anybody carte blanche to do the same thing here.

Among other things, the LAA demands full and accurate supporting paperwork. For G-TSIM, a maxium all-up test weight of 1,lb kg has been allowed, with the unfortunate effect that the second, dual-control seat cannot be used for the foreseeable future. Vne was reduced from the published factory figure, there was no clearance for aerobatics quite standard for the test phase and spinning was not allowed. The LAA stipulates a minimum of five hours test flying for a newly-constructed amateur-built aircraft.

In this case, the combined test flying amounted to 16 hours and the only real issues were high coolant temperature and a propensity to fly left-wing low. The first was solved with extra cooling slots in the cowling and the second with a realignment of the left flap.

This gave him some experience of a retractable undercarriage and constant-speed propeller. I have seen P pilots approach their aircraft from the front of the left wing, climb onto the left tyre, the wing leading edge and onto the walkway before swinging a leg into the cockpit. With the Titan it is more normal to approach from behind the wing and place a foot on the walkway and haul oneself up into the cockpit with one hand on the canopy rail. The wing sits at quite an angle and I can say from experience that this is best not done with a handful of a navigational charts, glasses, flying gloves, goggles, headset and the rest.

Stand on the squab and slip down into the seat, supporting your weight with the sides of the cockpit and canopy rails. Park the leather helmet on the stick. Of course the long nose blanks out the view directly ahead, but this as it should be with a Mustang and is something you soon work around. Find the four straps and buckle up. There is no seat adjustment. The position and throw of the stick are comfortable and nothing is likely to snag or restrict its movement. There is no parking brake, which is no problem so long as the toe brakes are covered when starting.

By the right knee is the single fuel selector and note that both tanks drain when either left tank or right tank is selected. The tanks hold a combined 85 litres and their indicators are set in the wing roots, left and right, right where your hands would dangle if you allowed them to drop to your sides.

Paul I think the speed numbers for cruise are pretty close. We may even be a bit conservative, as Bill said he thinks there may be an extra mph in the fast wing over the standard wing when flown with the LS3.The P is an iconic aircraft with legendary handling, arguably the finest piston fighter of WW-II, and maybe of all time.

John Williams, president of Titan Aircraft, had the same answer to that question. He surmised that he would never be able to buy or fly a real one, so he designed, built and flew a replica to Oshkosh in Titan started selling kits at that show, and says that kits have been sold and some 67 are flying. We went so far as to photograph both airplanes in formation. This was a task that challenged the cruise speed capabilities of the T and the low-speed handling of the P That photo mission highlighted one of the shortcomings of an airplane that was supposed to have the look and feel of a fighter.

It needed more power. Williams came to the same conclusion, and since then two more engine choices have been developed. With the new engine choices, we decided to take another look at this replica fighter.

The ultralight business was struggling, and Williams had a vision to design and build an airplane, so he abandoned the fabric wings of the Hawk and designed a metal airplane he called the Tornado.

Williams took measurements and photos as he formulated a plan to build a replica. Titan did not try to build its new airplane like a Mustang. The mission was to build an airplane that looked like one.

To keep the costs down, the company employed many of the same construction techniques used in the Tornado. Most notable of these is the aluminum-wrapped, solid-foam cores that shape the wings.

This forms a composite of aluminum and foam that is incredibly strong, very light and inexpensive to build. From the outset the idea was to put more power on the airplane than the original Rotax, but Williams was not satisfied with the propeller-speed reduction units PSRUs available at that time. The Rotax engine fit in the cowling and was dependable, but even the turbocharged lacked the power to provide the feel of performance expected in a fighter. One customer installed a six-cylinder Suzuki engine and designed his own belt reduction drive to fit the engine.

The customer ultimately convinced Williams to fly the airplane. It blew me away! He went so far as to buy the rights to the belt reduction unit the customer had designed and installed one on one of his own airplanes. Testing of the belt drive revealed some problems and Williams continued searching for a better solution. Introductions were made, and Autoflight agreed to design a three-gear unit for the Suzuki that would rotate the correct direction and, unlike the belt-drive units, accommodate a hydraulic propeller.

The engine and gearbox weigh pounds, more than the Rotax. This moves the CG forward, which improves handling and allows more rear-seat passenger weight. Williams reported the Suzuki engine coupled with the Autoflight PSRU has proved very successful and is flying in more than 20 Ts, some with over hours in service. If some is good, then more is better, and that led to the development of the Honda horsepower V-6 engine. This combination adds another pounds and is probably the forward CG limit for the T, but more about that later.

Williams reports 15 Hondas now flying, with the highest-time installation nearing the hour mark, and it is proving to be reliable.According to the auction announcement, the auction lot for this partially disassembled Messerschmitt murderer includes:. Tail, horizontal stabilizers and cowlings removed; Canopy has crazing and discoloration; Paint oxidized; Cockpit and engine compartment has corrosion and metal degradation.

All avionics and electrical wiring in the cockpit appear to be corroded and degraded. All instruments, faceplates, and gauges require refurbishment or overhaul. The aircraft requires full restoration. You may even be able to sell some of that stuff to Harrison Ford.
